Can a 2v2 Roguelike Warm You Up Better Than Deathmatch?

Read time: 4 min

Patch 13.06's Gauntlet: Glitched drafts random abilities into 16-player 2v2 ladders of 8-15 minutes. What it is, what our 26-agent database says about its draft pool, when it beats Deathmatch.

Can a 2v2 Roguelike Warm You Up Better Than Deathmatch?
Picture the routine: you queue solo at 11 p.m. to keep your hands warm, and ninety seconds in, a robotic chimera of your own ability draft is flashing you on a map stitched from two halves of different places - your partner's Gekko wingman concusses the angle, you swing, and the whole match is over before your ranked stack would have finished a pistol round. That is Gauntlet: Glitched, the mode Riot slid into Patch 13.06 beside the Warden rifle, and the strafe write-up got the hook right: it is VALORANT's own roguelike.

What the mode actually is

Pulling the September 14 dev-update coverage together (GoSUGAMERS, strafe):

  • 16 players, eight duos, paired into a tournament-style gauntlet of 2v2 duels; solo queue and duo queue both work.
  • Round wins keep your duo alive; losses drain a life meter instead of ending you instantly.
  • You build a Robo Agent on a randomized draft screen, spreading upgrades across your kit or pushing one ability to level 3.
  • Glitches mutate familiar abilities - a shooting Yoru decoy, a predatory Skye wolf, a concussive Gekko wingman.
  • Four hybrid arenas built from "stitched" halves of known locales, sessions tuned to 8-15 minutes.
  • Live September 23 with 13.06; the Agent Mastery progression system that replaces Agent Gear ships in the same patch - remember the per-agent playtime rework we broke down on September 11? That was the on-ramp to this.
  • The draft pool, weighed with our own numbers

What is actually in the gacha? Our agent database tracks 26 agents split 8 duelists, 6 controllers, 6 initiators, 6 sentinels - four abilities each, so a full roster contributes on the order of 104 ability slots to draft space. Counted on September 15, 2026. Two consequences worth knowing before your first run:

  • Duelist kits are 31% of the pool by raw count, so random hands skew entry-flavored; expect flash-adjacent and movement-adjacent noise more often than smokes.
  • Upgrades, not rarity, are the win condition - a level-3 Yoru clone beats a level-1 ultimate from any other table slot, which is exactly why the dev notes treat the draft as an economy rather than a lottery.
  • And since the bracket escalates you toward the Warden as the field shrinks, Gauntlet may be the cheapest way to build muscle memory on the 2x-scope rifle before anyone at Champions dares buy it in a force round.

    The honest warm-up question

Deathmatch drills crosshair placement against real humans for 8-10 minutes; Gauntlet drills decision-making under novelty for the same time, but each duel is 2v2 - fewer raw angles per minute. If your ranked games start with shaky first-bullets, run 10 minutes of aim drills first and save the glitch ladder for the second block. If your issue is panicking into unfamiliar agent combinations, this is the most purpose-built practice tool Riot has shipped since the Range, and our edpi calculator is still where you confirm your baseline before either.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Gauntlet: Glitched?

An experimental 13.06 mode: 16 players as eight duos in 2v2 gauntlet matches, drafting random abilities into upgradable Robo Agents, with glitches that rewrite what those abilities do.

    How long is a match?

Riot tunes intended sessions to 8-15 minutes - a full ranked match's time buys you two to three Gauntlet runs.

Can I queue with a partner?

Yes; solo players get auto-paired, duos queue together.

    Does it touch my rank?

No. Ranked itself changes separately: a Competitive profile rework next patch and a Competitive Flex queue opening the 2027 season.

    What abilities count as glitches?

Any drafted ability can draw a modifier - the confirmed examples are a shooting Yoru decoy, predatory Skye wolf and concussive Gekko wingman.

Can I try the Warden here?

Yes, arguably the point: matches progress toward the new rifle as duos fall, so Gauntlet is likely where most players fire it first.

    How long will it run?

Unannounced beyond the September 23 launch, so plan on limited-time.

    Bottom line

Treat Gauntlet as a practice-tool week, not a playlist: two 12-minute runs before ranked, one aim block after, and a scouting trip at the Warden while it is still a novelty.
